[Exhibition: La Louvière, Belgium]
Encore sous pression… Atelier Michael Woolworth
Centre for Engravings & Prints, La Louvière (Belgium)
4 February – 7 May 2017
American-born, Michael Woolworth moved to Paris in 1979 and soon afterwards met Franck Bordas, who introduced him to the world of publishing and lithography. He learned on the job how to master traditional printmaking techniques and to manage relationships with the artists, and his passion for “creating under pressure” never left him. In 1985, he established his own shop, at the time located on Île Saint-Louis.
He moved to another atelier in 2000, then to yet another before settling in a historic passage, Place de la Bastille, where he still works today.
His workshop is a kind of laboratory for creation in which the art of printing is constantly being reinvented. Although he prints exclusively on manual presses, Michael Woolworth always gives precedence to experimentation and innovation: he combines techniques, often pushing them beyond their limits and even imagining new ones. By the same token, supports and formats are continuously rethought according to the artists’ wishes.
Prints, monotypes, multiples and artist’s books by Carole Benzaken, Stéphane Bordarier, Mélanie Delattre-Vogt, Marc Desgrandchamps, Jim Dine, Brecht Evens, Philippe Favier, Frédérique Loutz, Pierre Mabille, Roberto Matta, William MacKendree, Jean François Maurige, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Stéphane Pencréac’h, Jaume Plensa, José Maria Sicilia, Djamel Tatah, Barthélémy Toguo, …
